Today’s sermon audio can be found on Castbox at 156 “Be Patient, Therefore” James 5:7-11.

Our primary text for March 29 was James 5:7-11. For our first reading we read 1 Peter 1:3-9. We started with the Second Coming of our Lord; surely that ought to motivate us to be patient. Then we looked at the eight imperative mood verbs James uses in this section (5:7-11); James is quite insistent that we be patient and he is quite insistent that we understand why we ought to be patient. Then we worked through these five verses so that we could understand (1) what James meant by the verb “be patient” and (2) why James commanded us to be patient.

Patience, steadfastness, endurance, and perseverance are all closely related aspects of what James has commanded here. The Second Coming of Christ, the purpose of the Lord, and the character of the Lord all motivate us to be patient.

We need to remember that James is giving us Law-oriented instructions to help us express our gratitude to God for the great salvation He has given to us. Ultimately, the strengthening we need to be patient comes from God (1 Thessalonians 3:11-13). Jesus Christ is our righteousness. He has obtained our pardon for sin for us and He has canceled the power of sin over us.
